ReSTART Program
Soroptimist International of White Rock continues to make significant strides in supporting women and children fleeing violence through their ReSTART initiative. Established in 2004, ReSTART, which stands for Surviving Today and ReSTARTing Tomorrow, provides essential household kits to individuals transitioning from abusive environments to independent living.
The initiative was born out of a recognition of the critical need for basic household items among those leaving transition houses. Often arriving with little to no personal belongings, women and children require fundamental necessities to establish their own households. The ReSTART Kits, comprising kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom essentials, cater to both single women and families, ensuring they have the tools needed to rebuild their lives.
Funding for the initial kits was secured through a grant from Soroptimist International of the Americas. Since then, the organization has tirelessly pursued various fundraising initiatives, including the successful Purse Auction event, Comedy shows, and the popular Wine, Women and Chocolate event to name a few. It is also supplemented by support from the Province of British Columbia’s Gaming program.
Since its inception, the ReSTART program has made a tangible difference, providing kits to 532 women, 997 children, and 197 senior women over the age of 50. These numbers underscore the initiative’s impact in enabling individuals to transition to independent living while breaking free from the cycle of abuse.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and a shortage of suitable accommodation, Soroptimist International remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals. They firmly believe that through a combination of practical assistance, professional counseling, and education, women can reclaim their independence and build a brighter future for themselves and their families.
As they reflect on their achievements, Soroptimist International of White Rock remains dedicated to advocating for an end to violence against women and children, reaffirming their position as a beacon of hope and support in the community.
